Ashton + Mitch didn’t plan on eloping, but then 2020 hit.
Their cancelled wedding broke their hearts, but their emotional Juneteenth elopement in Breckenridge helped put back the pieces. This day was perfect.
Ashton + Mitch are special. As with many 2020 couples, their wedding day fell apart. Tears were shed, frustrations built, but still – hope. Still, joy. Bit by bit, and with a little help and love from us and their closest friends and family, Ashton + Mitch picked up those broken wedding day pieces and created something infinitely more beautiful than we all imagined. June 19th, a personally significant day for these day, was the new date. A sweet little jeep trail with vast mountain views and the perfect babbling brook just outside of Breckenridge, CO was the new location. News of a brand new life, a miracle in the middle of it all. This emotional, rainy Colorado elopement day was a dream. Their day wasn’t at all what they had planned, but it was certainly even better.
I am CRYING. Wow these hormones are no joke and I wasn’t ready for this!! I just saw the email and can’t wait until Mitchell gets home so we can ugly cry together!!! You guys are truly amazing and what you do. We will never forget this experience and everything you guys did to make our day so so special. You guys are unforgettable and will be a part of our lives forever. We love you guys and can’t say thank you enough for making this such an amazing day and catching our special moments. Did I already mention I’m literally crying? That’s how beautiful this all is. We are so blessed and lucky to say you’re a part of our story.

Their words were pure poetry, don’t you agree? Pretty sure we’ll be hiring Mitch to do voice overs from now on. There wasn’t a dry eye in the entire meadow.

Tell us about your love story.
Mitchell and I have been together since 2013. A little bit about how we met . Mitchell and I were both living at dorms when we first got to know each other. Mitchell had heard around the grapevine that I had a Nintendo 64 in my room. I was just relaxing in my room when I heard a knock on my door; I opened it and it was Mitchell. We had never met before and it took me by surprise when he said “ I heard you have a Nintendo 64 in here, wanna play ?” I was so surprised but honestly so excited that he wanted to hangout as I was definitely love-struck the moment I laid my eyes on him .
We played games for over 6 hours, talking and joking like we had been friends forever. Mitchell denies it now but I may have whooped his butt in Pokémon stadium and cruisin’ USA! Lol Ever since that day Mitchell and I were inseparable . Best friends before anything but both surely in love. The rest is history.
What is the personal significance of the date you chose, Juneteenth?
When our wedding plans fell through we felt like it was the perfect opportunity to get married on the day we had originally wanted to marry, which was Juneteenth. This date holds a special significance for me, being an African American from Texas. Juneteenth signifies and commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. Even though the emancipation proclamation had become official 2 years prior, it had little impact on Texans until the arrival of General Gordon Granger’s regiment in 1865.
For Mitchell and I, color does not define our love and we thought getting married on this day would signify the solidity of our love and our freedom to marry whoever we want. Mitchell has always shown his love and support for me and the tribulations I’ve had to endure. Unfortunately, Mitchell has also become aware of how uncomfortable our union makes some people still to this day, but it doesn’t stop our love for each other in the slightest!
During this whole process of being engaged and living through the uncertainty of this pandemic has definitely brought us closer to eachother and closer to God. I couldn’t ask for a different set of circumstances because it has made us even stronger and truly made us realize that our union is about our love; not a fancy wedding, venue, or any material things!
