Family photos are crazy enough as it is – don’t add extra stress by worrying about what to wear!

Personally, I love family photos that feel real. A little messy. A little chaotic. Because that’s what parenthood looks like, right? When a family shows up exactly as they are, ready to just laugh, be together, and fully embrace whatever the next 30 minutes or an hour brings – that’s where the real magic of a family session happens.

That said, I know you want to look good, too. You want your outfits to coordinate – highlighting everyone’s unique personalities & still meshing together as a cohesive whole.

In Colorado, we take “casual” seriously. 🙂 Bring on the Cotopaxi & the Patagonia & the Carhartt. I don’t claim to be an expert in many things – especially clothing – but I know what photographs well together & I’m excited to share some casual outfit ideas for your next family photo session!

The Mazza family, who we looooove, planned for their fall session in our mountain meadow & they arrived looking so cute! Their photos are a perfect example of coordinating, casual fall outfits – pulling earthy tones, mixing textures, and most importantly, feeling like themselves.

Casual Outfit Ideas Dos:

Pick a Color Family
– and stick with it! We loved the earthy tones here: rust, green, beige, blue. It was neutral without being boring at all!

Mix Textures
– like chunky knits, cotton, & denim. This adds variety without being visually overwhelming.

Be comfortable
– because when you feel good, you look good! The best outfits are ones you feel like yourself in. And when you feel like yourself, you’ll be able to act like yourself, too.

Casual Outfit Ideas Don’ts:

Pick too many colors
– because this can look visually cluttered. Pick 3-5 (even if they’re bright, we love that!) and plan everyone’s outfits around those

Dress everyone in the same materials
– like all denim or all chunky knits. Mixing & matching is good!

Choose things you wouldn’t normally wear
– because an uncomfortable dress or a scratchy sweater may sure look cute, but there’s nothing worse than a crabby kid (or husband shhhh) who hates how their clothes feel.

Family photos are going to feel a little chaotic – that’s normal & totally okay! Hopefully these tips can help you look good, too.
