A Colorful Backyard Wedding in Breckenridge

If you’re on the search for colorful backyard wedding inspiration, look no further than Emma & Andreas’ Breckenridge day!

Breckenridge Elopement Photographer, a colorful backyard wedding

Summer in the mountains just begs for a colorful backyard wedding, doesn’t it? Emma & Andreas hosted just the one, and it was a burst of joy, ray of sunshine, bundle of happiness – all rolled into one beautifully designed day.

Emma’s family home was the perfect setting – wildflowers & views abound, it didn’t need much else to complete the garden wedding vibe.

One of my favorite details was the assortment of mismatched buckets filled with flowers. So simple & such a great way to add more color. Garden of Eden, one of our favorite local florists, really knocked it out of the park with endless colorful blooms. From the aspen arbor to the flower decorated cake, we were – as always – so impressed with Carla’s work! Here’s another favorite wedding we did with her team.

Other fun touches included: bubbles! The Cocktail Caravan! Live ceremony music! Dancing under a cotton candy sunset! A YELLOW cake! Matching pink velvet chairs for the bride & groom! Their precious daughter, who was the youngest flower girl. And on, and on, and on.

Emma + Andreas even joined me for a short couple’s session the day before their wedding. Scroll to the very end for a few of those favorites!

Pour some bubbly & enjoy looking through our favorites from Emma & Andreas’ colorful backyard wedding day!

And, for good measure – a few from their day-before couple’s session at Blue Lakes, too!

What Month is Best for Engagement Photos in the Mountains

After you decide you wanna get married, you may be asking yourselves: what month is best for engagement photos in the mountains? We’ve got the answer.

What Month is Best for Engagement Photos?

You’ve just decided to say “I do” and now it’s time to schedule with your favorite Colorado engagement photographer – YAY!

So, what month is best?

There’s no one answer to this. Colorado is beautiful 12 months out of the year, so you can’t go wrong with whatever you choose!

A few things to ask yourselves when picking the best month for engagement photos:

  • What do we want to do? This may answer your question for you. If you want to snow-shoe, let’s look at February or March! If you want to have picnic in a meadow, July or August would be rad. If you’d love to dance in the rain, June is a great bet.
  • Do we enjoy snow? If the answer is a resounding “nope”, stay away from October – May.
  • What do we want to wear? If you don’t feel like bundling up, look at June – September. But keep in mind, Colorado can give ya snow & cold weather in the mountains anytime.
  • When is our wedding? For some, it’s fun to have engagement photos from a different season than their wedding. Having a July wedding? Let’s do a winter engagement session. Getting married in March? Let’s catch the last of the fall color in early October.

Does that help?

BUT, because you’re here for an actual answer, let’s talk about August & September. Two of our most popular months of the year – and for good reason! The golden light illuminates the mountains & wild grasses; the weather is normally warm with minimal chance for heavy rain or snow. It’s everyone’s favorite time of year, and ours, too!

We met up with Brittney & Nick in early September, and their session sealed the deal for me. When you ask us what month is best for engagement photos in the mountains we’ll say: August & September!

Here’s why.

How to Write Your Own Wedding Vows

Weddings come with countless choices. When planning their big day, many couples decide to write their own wedding vows. Here’s how you can, too!

How to write your own vows

Choosing to write your own wedding vows is no small decision! We did, and we believe it’s such a beautiful way to personalize your ceremony, bringing extra emotion to an already emotional day.

Are you interested in writing your own wedding vows? We’re glad to share a few tips!

But first, here to teach you how to write your own wedding vows, Nicole & Ryan! Grab your tissues before watching.

Here are a few of our favorite tips to help you get started with yours.

1. Begin at the beginning.

There’s no better place to start, is there? In the film above, it was so special how Nicole began with how she’s loved him since she was 19. A beautiful nod to the start of their love story. We suggest keeping the inside jokes to a minimum, but don’t shy away from sharing the favorite parts of your story!

2. Plan out the length.

You do you, but it can help to keep your personal vows under around 5 minutes each. Write them once, including every single word you want to, and then time yourself reading them out loud.

Then add 30 seconds.

You’ll likely be emotional and it could feel difficult to get through them on your wedding day. If you’ve got 5 front and back pages to read it can be overwhelming. With a concise, beautifully written single page or two, your emotions won’t stop you from getting through it all.

3. But don’t make them too short.

We do recommend saying more than “we’re getting married, yay! I love you.”

4. Bullet point lists are easy to read aloud.

When you’re writing our your vows, keep in mind that you’ll likely be a little nervous. You’ve maybe never professed your deepest feelings out lout in front of friends and family before. It can be nerve-wracking! Bullet points are simply easier to keep track of than long paragraphs are!

This format also allows you to take a breath between each point and sloooooow down, which is so important for your nerves, for your wedding film, & for your guests to clearly listen to your words.

How To Write Your Own Vows

5. Consider writing them together.

There are couple ways to approach this. You can write and read identical vows to each other that you create together. This is really beautiful and a personalized take on the traditional “repeat after me” vows. If you want a best of both worlds approach, this may be it!

Otherwise, if it’s important that you write your own individual vows and keep them private until your ceremony, we recommend having the conversation to outline your expectations with each other. Things like “let’s each write 5 promises” or “only include 1 joke” or ‘no more than 4 paragraphs, but at least 2″. This just helps ensure your vows are on the same page, avoiding the whole “one person only said jokes and the other sobbed their way through the most personal thing we’ve ever heard” debacle.

6. Pull from the heart.

Ultimately, write from your heart. When you stand before each other, in front of your friends & family or alone with only the mountains to witness, his is your chance to make some pretty big promises – but don’t let that trip you up. Whatever story you choose to share or whatever you decide to vow to do in your years together, just take a deep breath before you start and soak it all in.

We hope this helped! Tell us – will you write your own vows? What tip would you add to this list to help other couples?

Six of the Best Colorado Cabins to Book a Getaway

There are plenty to choose from, but here are six of the best Colorado cabins to book your next getaway at!

Basecamp Visual, a Breckenridge brand photographer, shares six of the best Colorado cabins to book a stay.

We’re sharing six of the very best Colorado cabins to book your next getaway to!

Colorado is well loved by locals and tourists alike. And it makes sense! The crisp mountain air, endless recreation opportunities only matched by the views. Chill people, lots of dogs, and best of all – some really rad places to kick your feet up while you’re here.

Backcountry Aframe

Backcountry Aframe is located outside of beautiful Kremmling, CO and is absolutely one of the best Colorado cabins to stay in. The owners partnered with Den Outdoors to create this fresh, modern Aframe that is as crisp & bright inside as it is dark & moody outside. If design is important to you when choosing your stays, this one won’t disappoint. The open concept floor plan (peek the master loft bedroom right up from the kitchen!) makes the Aframe feel much larger than it is. It’s got two bedrooms & bathrooms, a stocked kitchen, gorgeous living space, and an oversized deck for dining, cooking, and lounging. It’s surrounded by aspens & shrubbery that are gorgeous in the fall, so if you can plan for a long weekend in September or October you’ll surely fall in love!

El Alma Aframe

Located in beautiful Placer Valley just outside of Alma, Colorado, the El Alma Aframe is quaint, beautifully styled, and perfectly located. Whether you’re looking to hole up for a few days or want a spot close enough to skiing and amenities yet still quietly away from the hustle, El Alma is it. El Alma is a smaller cabin, so it’s best for couples or a small family (think like 4 of ya), but with a fully stocked kitchen, a hot tub in the back, and a front patio to take in the views of the Mosquito Range you’ll have everything you need. Just minutes from Alma & Fairplay, two super cute little towns (shhh don’t tell anyone our best kept secret), or a beautiful 30 minute drive over Hoosier Pass. Just heads up – you’ll want a 4WD in the winter for both the driveway and your drive to and from the cabin.

The Fairplay Cabin

The baby behind Breck Cabin Company‘s owners, Jesse & TJ, the Fairplay Cabin is such a treat. It’s dog friendly and oozing with masculine, quintessential Colorado mining town vibes. We love the dark exterior, don’t you? The cabin itself is constructed from multiple old mining cabins, so the charm and imperfections are endless – which is just part of what makes it perfect. The Fairplay Cabin has two cozy bedrooms & a living space that’s sure to spark hours of conversation. This cabin is located in the town of Fairplay and is walkable to parks, shops, restaurants, and grocery. We’d live here ourselves if they’d let us – and fun fact! – this cute cabin was Jesse & TJ’s personal home until very recently when they upsized. You know it’s special.

Pine Cone Cabin

The Pine Cone Cabin is another property with Breck Cabin Co, and it’s a beauty. This is an authentic log cabin with high ceilings and a wood burning stove with a gorgeous stone surround. It’s masculine in style and beautifully furnished, but without any sacrifices to it’s coziness. Located in the Valley of the Sun neighborhood outside of Fairplay, CO, it’s quiet & tucked away – perfect for a long weekend of rest. The VOS neighborhood is also where we live, so it’s extra special to us! There are beautiful hikes and endless views and moose. Pine cone is perfect for a larger group, as it has room for up to 8 guests! There’s a fully stocked kitchen, game room, & decent wifi, giving guests the opportunity to disconnect to reconnect. 4WD is recommend for this neighborhood. Don’t make us come pull you out of the ditch. 😉

Quartzville Cabin

This beauty is expected to be ready for its first guests in late Spring 2023, but wow, it’ll be worth the short wait. Situated at around 11,500′ elevation outside of Alma, CO, it’s beautifully snowy from October through May. It’s the perfect winter retreat. (But will be gorgeous in the summer, too!) There’s a hot tub and dining area on the back deck, adorned with market lights & surrounded by towering pines. The cabin itself is tastefully designed in a mountain modern style – our fave. The owners are remodeling the bottom floor with plans to add an additional bedroom, bathroom, and open living area with a roll-up door to allow for opportunity to enjoy the fresh air. This cabin will also allow very small elopements, like this one! So, hint hint. Hit us up!

Sunset Point Cottage

Finally, wrapping up our best Colorado cabins list, we’ve got Sunset Point Cottage, on Lake Granby, CO. This one is a little different than the rest of our list, but could easily be at the very top! It’s a completely reimagined old boathouse turned home. You wouldn’t believe the “before”. Owned by the same people as Backcountry Aframe, you know it’s full of smart & accommodating design. A great short term rental can be both gorgeous AND make sense for both its owners and guests. This one is exactly that. Beautiful lake & mountain views, three bedrooms (including a bunk room!), and an open concept main space make it the perfect getaway for a couple or family. We love the clean, Scandinavian style, and know you will, too.

Breckenridge Skiing Wedding at Peak 8

Olivia + Lucas had the epitome of a mountain classy Breckenridge skiing wedding. It was perfect in every way.

Breckenridge Elopement Photographer + Videographer; Breckenridge skiing wedding

Did you know that a Breckenridge skiing wedding is totally a thing?! As a Colorado wedding photographer & videographer, we’ve seen a lot of really cool ideas!

We won’t claim to be experts in skiing weddings. In fact, we partnered with the lovely Gabrielle with Ski the Day for this day – she’s the best, hands down. We were so thrilled she was available to join Dave for a couple hours on the slopes by The Grand Colorado at Peak 8 documenting Olivia & Lucas. Dave on video, which you can watch below, and Gabrielle on photo for the skiing shots!

The rest of O+L’s perfect day was spent at Sapphire Point, where they held their ceremony. The couple worked directly with Ebs & Natalie with Distinctive Mountain Events to create a perfectly Colorado wedding. Personalized Yetis & tartan scarves and gorgeous floral by Garden of Eden sealed the deal.

Finally, we wrapped it up with some portraits at the River Walk, and at Modis Breck for dinner & sparkler desserts.

We loved spending their beautiful Breckenridge skiing wedding day with them, and we are so happy to share it with you!

Wanna see their rad video teaser?

And, we’re so happy to share their full film!

Here’s what Olivia + Lucas had to say about working with us.

Seriously AMAZING! We love it! Looking for a picture frame that can play videos so I can show everyone that comes over lol! Showed my family and my mom cried. It was so beautiful and reminded us of just how perfect our wedding day was. I don’t think many couples get to say that their wedding day was truly perfect with zero issues and they wouldn’t do anything differently. Thank you thank you for being awesome! Currently trying to think of where to go for our next ski vacation over our 1 year anniversary and this just made us more excited for planning and just debating about going back to Breckenridge! That town is just the perfect ski town. No where else compares… it was beyond perfect for our wedding!

Olivia + Lucas

What an amazing winter wedding! It was truly a Colorado wedding photographer & videographer’s dream.
